 Les origines d'International Harvester" remonte à 1831 quand Cyrus Hall McCormack invente la première moissoneuse mécanique. Au début du 20e siècle, il existe 2 principaux fabricants de moissoneuse; "McCormack" et "Deering", tous deux à Chicago, en 1902 ils fusionnent avec 3 autres plus petites pour former "International Harvester Co".
En 1974, la compagnie renforce sa présence en Europe par l'acquisition de "Seddon Atkinson". Des difficultés financières vont forcer le groupe à abandonner sa conquête Européenne, et, en 1986, il est reconstitué en tant que "Navistar International Transport Co".
