 Les origines de "Leyland" débute dans le Lancashire dans la ville de "Leyland" en 1896. a cette époque la compagnie fabriquait des véhicules à vapeur, c'est en 1904 qu'elle experimanta des moreurs à explosion.
A la fin des années 40', "Leyland rivalisait avec "AEC" comme premier constructeur britanique de véhicules lourds.
Leyland reprend Albion Motors in 1951 et Scammell Lorries en 1955, "Triumph" en 1961 et le groupe ACVs (AEC) en 1962 pour former la "Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd". La "British Leyland Motor Corporation" (BLMC), fut créée en 1968 par la fusin de "British Motor Holdings" (BMH) et "Leyland Motor Corporation" (LMC)
